Big Moose Harley-Davidson
When a childhood friend asked for help converting an abandoned furniture store into a motorcycling destination, we assembled a passionate community to design and build a new Harley-Davidson flagship. The building offered a great location with plenty of space and parking, but converting it required close collaboration between Analogue Studio, the Owners, Harley-Davidson and their design team, contractors and consultants.
From the street to the service bay, our job was to make the design work. Outside, we worked with the city to permit the iconic signage and designed the parking lot for the unique needs of motorcycles. In the showroom, we adapted Harley-Davidson’s tightly curated design standards to create an immersive retail environment. In the back-of-house, the company defers the design of highly customized support spaces to the teams that work in them every day.
Working with their techs and touring other shops, we designed a light-filled service bay so that no part of a bike is in shadow, supported by specialized ventilation, compressed air, oil distribution and infrastructure for indoor fueling. A dedicated bike wash captures wastewater for off-site treatment, while seasonal storage houses bikes through Maine winters. A photography studio with a turntable and specialized lighting showcases motorcycles beyond the showroom.
Beyond our personal connection, many of the contractors and consultants ride Harleys and have deep connections with the brand. The team didn’t just design and build a Harley-Davidson dealership—they helped create their local shop.
