Pioneering fitness center renovated for the next generation

Opened in 1984, Healthworks Porter Square is the first urban flagship that set the stage for the following 40 years. In 2019 Analogue Studio was entrusted with designing a phased renovation of the entire club over the following 5 years, without major changes to the HVAC, plumbing and electrical infrastructure and while the club remained operational.

We started by creating a master plan for the renovation, working closely with the Owner and General Contractor to develop a renovation strategy that established new design standards, added space for strength and functional training, integrated modern features like color changing lighting and infrared hot yoga, all while solving urgent operational needs. Curiously enough, the key to the entire renovation was the towels.

Storing towels at the reception desk required it to be located in the basement where ample space was available. The first phase renovated the locker rooms to accommodate towel storage while refreshing the finishes and lighting and piloting new vanities that have become standards throughout the portfolio. Relocating towel storage to the locker rooms allowed us to relocate a smaller check-in desk to the street entrance. In place of the former desk, we created space for a new mind-body studio with dramatic lighting that shifts subtle ambiance to simulated daylight. Lastly, with the mind-body studio in the basement, we were able to create space on the fitness floor for added functional and strength training areas and a dramatic renovation of the main and cycling studios. It all started with the towels.
