Collaborative Design for Tomorrow's Engineers
Northeastern University’s vision for the Design Studio was to rival the world’s most innovative engineering offices, inspiring students while preparing them for future careers. Analogue Studio drew inspiration from the natural world to create a creative, dynamic and collaborative learning environment at the heart of the department.
Through extensive collaboration with students, faculty, staff, and administrators, we developed a design responsive to the community’s needs and aspirations. We transformed a formerly cramped area into a lofty, light-filled hub by exposing the structure and infrastructure above. Full-height glass walls create visual connections between students and faculty offices, fostering community and connection in the department. Organically shaped tables promote seamless transitions between individual and group work.
The design language draws inspiration from the natural world that civil and environmental engineers study. Organic forms appear throughout—from custom-designed furniture pieces to topographic wall panels and triangular acoustic pendant lights that reference engineering principles. The color palette, derived from natural environments, creates a sophisticated yet energizing atmosphere that supports creativity and focus.
Through its transparent, flexible, and collaborative design, the new Design Studio brings students and faculty together to prepare them to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
