Redefining premium fitness
The Republic Fitness flagship in Davis Square establishes a new philosophy for the brand that promotes longevity and performance through functional strength training and the latest in recovery science. Analogue Studio created the original Republic brand in 2014 and in 2024 designed the strategic brand update to harmonize with the architecture and interior of the new location.
The turf area at the windows makes functional training the face of the club, while squat racks and the dumbbell area hold the center of the floor, opening onto the first Strength Studio in the Healthworks Group portfolio. Designed in coordination with Healthworks’ fitness, operational and business leaders, the Strength Studio pilots new classes and programming for the company.
Through the locker rooms, the Restore Spa is a meditative respite combining whirlpool, steam room, sauna and cold plunge pools. Unexpected sunlight washes across hand-glazed tiles surrounding the spa, evoking the natural connections of contrast therapy between hot and cold, dry and wet.
Technical and schedule challenges added layers of complexity to the design. With the subway running directly below the building, an excavation permit for the whirlpool would take years. In response, we oriented the entire club to place the whirlpool over the partial basement and designed the spa and its complex waterproofing requirements to span two independent structural systems.
Converting a grocery store into a luxury fitness center on a tight timeline left no room to discover problems in the field. Our decade of experience with the Owner and General Contractor helped us conceive and execute a meticulous design in just one year.
